Sony RX100 VI: How good is it?

Sony RX100 VI Review

Sony RX100 VI is yet another iteration of Sony’s RX100 series of pocketable high-end compact cameras. The Camera was launched in June 2018. The last few years have not been kind on point-and-shoot cameras, especially with iPhone and Samsung smartphone cameras being the go-to choice for most instant photographic situations. However, the Sony RX100 VI captures more detailed images and video than any smartphone.

Weighing about 301g (10.62 oz), including battery, the RX100 VI is a tiny camera with a minimal footprint. Sony RX100 VI has gained a bit of depth over its predecessor, the Sony RX100 VA, but it still fits into most side pockets. The body and ergonomics of the RX100 VI are almost identical to previous models in the series.

Owners or users of any previous models will be familiar with the layout and controls of the Sony RX100 VI. The top surface has a dedicated mode dial, a power button, a shutter with a zoom collar, and a popup flash button. The RX100 VI has new optics, including eight aspherical lens elements with 13 aspherical surfaces for high resolution to the edge of the image across the zoom range. Additional four AA (advanced aspherical) lenses correct spherical and coma aberrations, and two ED glass elements suppress aberration for high resolution, even in the higher zoom range.

The improved zoom collar is smooth and effective, which sometimes could be too quick. The rear of the camera body is mainly taken up by the 3-inch LCD screen, along with a selection of small and quite fiddly buttons.

The Sony RX100’s Fast Hybrid AF responds in a super-fast 0.03-seconds seamlessly integrates the excellent speed and tracking of focal-plane phase-detection AF with high-accuracy contrast AF. This boosts the Camera to focus, track and capture sharp, clear, still images of subjects in all situations, even during fast dynamic action.

The stacked CMOS sensor enables an extra-high frame rate of up to 960fps. Shooting at 200 mm telephoto, it’s possible to record impressive close-up super slow motion footage up to 40X slower. Fast Hybrid Autofocus also delivers precision tracking when shooting 4K movies. Autofocus drive speed and the AF tracking sensitivity are adjustable, so focus transitions can be tuned to match the scene and your creativity.

For more advanced shooting and production, the Sony RX100 VI supports and is compatible with various movie functions typically found in equipment for professional use, including Picture Profile, Gamma Display Assist, Zebra, clean HDMI output, TC/UB, Rec Control, Marker functions and Proxy recording for simple net-based sharing and transferring to smartphones.
